AI Website Builders vs a Properly Built Website — What's the Difference?

Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy all promise you a website in minutes. But is that actually a good thing?

You've probably seen the adverts. “Build a website in 60 seconds with AI!” Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, and a dozen others are all pushing AI-powered website builders that promise to do everything for you. Type in your business name, pick a style, and your website is ready. It sounds brilliant. And honestly, for some people, it might be enough. But before you hand your business's online presence over to a template generator, it's worth understanding what you're actually getting — and what you're giving up.

What Are AI Website Builders, Exactly?

These are tools built into platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy that use AI to generate a website for you automatically. You answer a few questions about your business — what you do, what style you like, what pages you need — and the AI puts together a site based on your answers. It pulls from a library of pre-built templates, drops in some placeholder text, suggests a colour scheme, and gives you something that looks like a website within a few minutes. On the surface, it feels like magic. But let's look a bit closer.

The Pros — Let's Be Fair

  • They're fast. If you need something online today, an AI builder can get you there. For a brand-new business that just needs a holding page while they get started, that speed has real value.
  • They're cheap to start. Most offer free tiers or low monthly plans starting around £10–15 a month. If your budget is genuinely zero, that's hard to argue with.
  • No technical knowledge needed. You don't need to understand code, hosting, or domains. The platform handles everything, and you edit by dragging and dropping.
  • They look decent at first glance. The templates are designed by professionals, so the baseline quality is reasonable. You won't end up with something that looks like it was made in 1998.

The Cons — And This Is Where It Matters

Every Site Looks the Same

This is the big one. AI website builders pull from the same pool of templates. That means your plumbing business could end up looking almost identical to the plumber three streets away who used the same platform. Your website is supposed to be the front door of your business. If it looks like every other front door on the street, why would someone choose to walk through yours? A properly built website is designed around your brand, your customers, and what makes you different. It doesn't look like anyone else's because it wasn't built from the same box of parts.

You Don't Own It the Way You Think You Do

This catches a lot of people out. When you build a website on Wix or Squarespace, your site lives on their platform. You can't pick it up and move it somewhere else. If you decide to leave, you're starting from scratch. With a custom-built website, you own the code, the design, and the content. If you ever want to move to a different hosting provider or work with a different developer, you can. It's yours.

They're Slower Than They Should Be

AI builders load a lot of extra code behind the scenes to make the drag-and-drop editing work. That extra code makes your site slower. And slow websites lose customers — research consistently shows that people leave a site if it takes more than a few seconds to load. A hand-built website only includes the code it actually needs, which means faster load times, better performance, and a better experience for your visitors.

SEO Is an Afterthought

Search engine optimisation — how well your site shows up on Google — is critical for any small business. AI builders will tell you they “include SEO tools,” and technically they do. But those tools are basic, and the underlying code the platforms generate is often bloated and poorly structured for search engines. A properly built website has SEO baked into its foundations from day one. Clean code, proper heading structure, fast loading, optimised images, structured data, and meta descriptions written specifically for your business and your area. That's the difference between showing up on page one and being buried on page five.

Customisation Hits a Wall

AI builders are great until you want something they haven't thought of. Need a specific booking system? Want your contact form to do something slightly different? Need to integrate with a tool your business already uses? You'll either find it's not possible, or you'll need to pay for a premium plugin that may or may not work properly. The more you try to customise a template site, the more frustrating it gets — and the more it starts to break. A custom website is built around what you need. If you need a feature, we build it. There's no “sorry, the platform doesn't support that.”

AI-Generated Content Is Generic

Most of these builders now offer to write your website copy using AI. And while the text it produces is grammatically correct, it's also completely generic. It doesn't know your business, your customers, or what makes you different. It writes the same bland paragraphs for every plumber, every salon, and every café. Your website copy should sound like you. It should speak directly to your customers in a way that builds trust and makes them want to get in touch. That takes thought and understanding — not a template prompt.

Support Is a Ticket System

When something goes wrong with a template site — and it will — your support option is usually a help centre, a chatbot, or a ticket that might get answered in 48 hours. When you work with a real person who built your website, you can pick up the phone. You get someone who knows your site, knows your business, and can fix the problem quickly. That's not a luxury — it's the difference between your website being down for an afternoon and being down for a week.

So Who Should Use an AI Website Builder?

Let's be honest. If you're a hobby project, a personal blog, or a brand-new business with no budget at all and you just need something online while you find your feet — an AI builder is fine. It's better than having nothing. But if your website is a serious part of how your business gets customers, it deserves more than a template that a thousand other businesses are using. Your website should work as hard as you do. It should load fast, rank well on Google, look professional, and actually convert visitors into enquiries.

To be clear — there's a difference between using a platform like Wix or Squarespace as a tool, with a professional building and managing the site for you, and using their AI generator to create one automatically. A skilled developer can build a good site on any platform. The issue is when the AI does everything and nobody checks the result.

What Does a Properly Built Website Give You?

  • A design that's actually yours — not a template with your logo dropped in.
  • Fast loading speeds — because the code is clean and lightweight.
  • Proper SEO foundations — so people in your area can actually find you.
  • Full ownership — the code and design belong to you.
  • Room to grow — need AI tools, a booking system, or something custom? No problem.
  • A real person to call — not a ticket queue.

The Bottom Line

AI website builders are a tool, and like any tool, they have their place. But they're not the right tool for every job. If your website is the front door of your business, you want it to be built properly — not assembled from the same flat-pack kit as everyone else's.

We build bespoke websites for small and medium businesses. Every site is designed from scratch, hand-coded, and built to actually bring in customers. And if you want AI tools alongside your website — chatbots, booking systems, content creation — we build those too, all working together seamlessly.

If you're thinking about a new website, or you're stuck on a template builder and wondering if there's something better, let's have a chat. No pressure, no hard sell — just an honest conversation about what would work best for your business.
